5 Golden Rules for Breaking in Selvedge Denim

5 Golden Rules for Breaking in Selvedge Denim

Raw and selvedge denim is unlike any other fabric. Unwashed and untamed, it starts rigid and gradually conforms to your body, mapping out custom creases, honeycombs, and fades that are completely unique to your life. But to get the perfect custom fit, you must follow the correct care protocols.

1. Wear Them Consistently Before the First Wash

Try to wear your jeans as much as possible before washing them for the first time. The longer you wait, the more defined the creases will become, resulting in high-contrast fades that look authentic.

2. Wash Inside-Out in Cold Water

When the day finally comes that your jeans need washing, turn them inside out. This protects the outer surface from friction and prevents erratic dye loss. Use cold water and mild detergent.

3. Avoid the Spin Cycle

Never put raw denim in a dryer or a high-spin washing machine. The intense spinning can create white streaks across the denim fabric that cannot be removed. Instead, let them soak in a tub and hang dry.

Pro Tip: Roll your wet jeans inside a towel and press down to absorb excess water before hanging them to dry.
